The color is like Homer’s wine-dark sea, but... red. The Malbec is often one of the stars of our lineup and this year is no exception: this wine is smooth, rich, round, well-balanced, and open for business. Cherry- and mulberry- scented, with hints of bacon, orange, oak, spice, and violets, it also has an appealing freshness on the nose almost reminiscent of an old-time wine crush – fresh grapes trampled underfoot. On the palate these qualities develop with a savory-sweet character, adding smoke, persimmon, and blackberry-raspberry compote to the medley of flavors. This is a charismatic and quaffable wine that is a pure mouthful of pleasure.
It is hard to beat as a pairing for smoked meats, couscous with sausage, tomato, and peppers, or pork belly, as well as smoked gouda or stilton on a sesame cracker, roast chicken, Mediterranean dishes of all kinds, and roasted fall vegetables. This might be one to load up on for the holidays; if not, find another excuse, because the Eleven 2014 Malbec is a total winner.
